Palmer Ranch Sarasota

If a day on the beach sounds inviting, Palmer Ranch is only about 10 minutes from the Stickney Point Causeway, which provides access to Siesta Key. Siesta Key beach is famous for its sugar-white sands and award-winning wide beaches. Or head a little further south and in about the same time, you’ll be on the more secluded Casey Key or, a bit further south, the family friendly Venice Beach.

Today’s Palmer Ranch development is part of 80,000 acres originally owned by Bertha Palmer, a Chicago socialite who settled in Sarasota in 1910, becoming one of the first prominent, wealthy northern visitors to make Sarasota a year-round residence. Mrs. Palmer, wife of department store tycoon Potter Palmer, developed a lavish estate, dubbed “The Oaks,” where she entertained famous visitors, added extensive gardens, and served as a leader developing the area. Her sons inherited the property upon her death, and they continued developing the area. Hugh Culverhouse, former owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, eventually owned the property and began the development of what we see today.
