Oyster Bay Estates Sarasota
This tranquil yet distinguished location features a variety of homes. Old Florida ranchers as well as executive residences and mansion estates are all part of Oyster Bay. Many of the homes have water frontage on Sarasota Bay or canals offering spectacular views and boat dock-age. Located in Oyster Bay is The Field Club, one of the city's most venerable private clubs offering boating, tennis & swimming in addition to superb dinning and social activities.
The first individual owner of the land area of Oyster Bay Estates was Robert Jeffcott who bought the land for $1.00 per acre in 1881. The land was later sold to Potter Palmer, Jr. who owned it from 1921 until 1923 when he sold it to Fred & Ede Wooley.
The Wooleys owned the property from 1923 to 1951. At that time, the Bispham Dairy Farm occupied the property adjacent to the south where The Landings Shopping Center is now located. The Bisphams leased the Wooley's land to use as grazing and pastureland for their cattle. At that time, they owned about 60 to 70 head of Guernsey and Jersey dairy cattle. The rental payment, for the use of the land, was one quart of milk a day delivered to Mr. Wooley's home in downtown Sarasota.
Developer Robert W. Newman, in association with Coasco, Inc., purchase the property from the Wooleys in 1951. The property was thereafter subdivided as the Oyster Bay Subdivision. The Declaration of Restrictions for Oyster Bay were recorded in Sarasota County on December 10, 1951.
