Casey Key Homes for Sale
Casey Key consists almost exclusively of single-family homes and spectacular waterfront estates. Less than 500 residents inhabit this 8 mile long island paradise. Many of the homes on Casey Key have beach-to-bay ownership where residents enjoy both the white sandy beach on the gulf side and calm boating waters on the bay side. Casey Key is a tropical island secluded from the hustle and bustle of urban living yet easily accessible to all the amenities of Sarasota and Venice.
Casey Key, Florida
Casey Key is one of the six barrier islands on the west coast of Florida that are in the vicinity of Sarasota. The island stretches from Siesta Key to the north to the Island of Venice at its southernmost point. Most of the island is less than 300 yards wide, with white sandy beaches along the Gulf on the west and the calm waters of Little Sarasota Bay on the east side.
Unlike the other barrier islands off of Sarasota County, Casey Key has a bit more of a “tucked away” feel, making it a perfect private getaway. The key boasts unspoiled stretches of pristine white beaches combined with zoning restrictions that prevent high-rise hotels and certain commercial activities. Casey Key offers a quiet, unhurried, private lifestyle that is hard to beat. Gorgeous waterfront estates are set on winding streets and surrounded by lush, well-maintained landscaping. Just a short drive to the mainland and you are near some of Sarasota’s best amenities.
Casey Key, Florida History
The teeming waters of the area encompassing Casey Key were an attraction to fishermen, so by the 18th century, there were fishing camps and traders all along this barrier island and its neighbor islands, and lively trade between Americans and Cubans was established. Until 1810, when Florida was acquired as a territory, the area changed hands often between the Spanish and the English, but Europeans had explored the keys off the coast in the early 16th century. A Spanish expedition landed not far south of Casey Key in Charlotte Harbor in 1513.
The key takes its name from U.S. Army Captain John Charles Casey, who was sent in the mid-1800s to survey the land. He was also assigned the duty of removing the Seminole Indians who lived in and around the area. He managed to build a tenuous trust with the tribe, and specifically with the chief, Billy Holeg, a.k.a. Billy Bowlegs. Unfortunately, that trust waned, along with Casey’s health, and when a third Seminole War erupted, Bowlegs was eventually paid to relocate to present-day Oklahoma in 1858.
The key was originally called Chaise’s Key, but a printing error replaced the name of the key with the name of the mapmaker, John Casey, and it stuck. Though some have tried to change the name back to Chaise’s Key, and later an attempt was made to change the name to Treasure Island in an attempt to attract investors and new property buyers, the name Casey Key has remained.
Sarasota saw a large real estate boom in the 20s, with much of the town’s development beginning in earnest around that time. Casey Key was no exception. Some of the channels were redirected or dredged, the shoreline was filled, and in 1923, the Treasure Island Bridge on the north end of the Key was built. The bridge remains today as one of the few one-lane rotating swing bridges still in use.
