Bungalow Hill in Sarasota, Florida

Bungalow Hill dates back to the turn of the century when, for a time, residents separated themselves from the City of Sarasota to become the town of Sarasota Heights. Residents were angry about Sarasota’s decision to annex the neighborhood.  The city of Sarasota, newly incorporated in 1914, wanted to expand its borders, but the people of Bungalow Hill rejected the move because it only resulted in higher taxes but no new services. They formed a charter for their own town and elected their own mayor.  For eight years, “Sarasota Heights” operated independently from the City of Sarasota.  By the mid-20s, the housing boom was in full swing, and the advantages to becoming a part of the city began to outweigh the disadvantages, so the people voted again, this time to become part of the city. The character of the people is fully reflected in the charm and character of the streets and homes of this jewel of a neighborhood.
