Out of Door Academy -Sarasota, Florida

As the 2nd oldest private school in the state of Florida, Out-of-Door Academy, known to locals ODA, was established in 1924 on Siesta Key. Two women, Miss Fanneal Harrison and Miss Catherine Gavin, had seen a world of suffering following World War I. Fanneal had organized and directed health camps for undernourished children in France and later directed the Czechoslovakia Junior Red Cross. Catherine had also served two years doing reconstruction work in France and Belgium. While in Europe, the two women discovered the progressive teaching methods of Dr. Ovide Decroly, a style that emphasized the child’s natural curiosity as a starting point for learning.

SCTI Newtown Campus Grand Opening - Nov. 9

A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on Tuesday (Nov. 9) for the new SCTI career and technical educational facility in Newtown.  The new 3,500 SF facility will be called SCTI Newtown Campus.  It contains six classrooms, office space and has the capacity to serve 80 students.  Career and technical education courses will be offered to students.

Phillippi Shores Elementary 7K Race - 10-16-10

Today we went with the kids to the Phillippi Shores Elementary 7K Race & 1 Mile Fun Run Event.  What a great event it was!  First of all we couldn't be more impressed with Phillippi Shores Elementary as a school.  The school gets an A+ from us as parents.  The facilities are excellent as well as the academics, the administration and the faculty.  Most importantly, there is a great school spirit and pride in the school displayed by all. We are so lucky to live here in Sarasota where great schools both private and public abound.

The 7K race started at 7:30am and the 1 mile shortly thereafter.  The event was very well attended and extremely well organized.  Olga ran the 1 mile race with the kids as I had photographic and social duties to attend
