Bird Key Real Estate for Sale
Bird Key is composed of 510 homes of which 303 are waterfront homes and 207 are interior homes. The waterfront homes include both bay-front homes, with spectacular bay views, and canal-front homes, with wide canals featuring deep protected water. The interior homes are referred to as garden homes in Bird Key and offer a great value for those not requiring waterfront.
Bird Key in Sarasota, Florida
Bird Key was developed by Arvida Realty, Inc. in 1959 when it purchased the island from the estate of John Ringling. Arvida filled the land and developed 511 lots, 291 of which were waterfront and 220 of which were inland lots. A unique feature of the development was the underground electric utility system which was way ahead of its time. On October of 1960, one year after construction began, Bird Key was completed. The lots were originally priced from $9,000 to $12,000 and were sold out rather quickly.
